Locust plague encircles Mexicos Cancun resort

Clouds of locusts have descended around the Mexican beach resort of Cancun, destroying corn crops and worrying officials in a region still recovering from the devastating fury of last years Hurricane Wilma.

Traveling in dark fogs, locusts are grasshoppers that have entered a swarming phase, capable of covering large distances and rapidly stripping fields of vegetation.

Imagine, they fly in the form of a flock. Imagine the width of a street, government official Martin Rodriguez said on Tuesday, describing the fields around Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula.

First-ever game between Mexico, Palmyra up next

Win or lose, Friday looms as a noteworthy day for the Mexico Bulldogs, who travel to Palmyra for a first-ever football meeting with the Panthers, currently the No. 8-ranked team in Class 2.

The Bulldogs, who have yet to meet a fellow Class 4 opponent this season, would find posting their first victory of the season more satisfying than just making a little history. After last weekends 27-0 loss to NCMC rival Fulton, Mexico stands at 0-3 at the varsity level, while 2-1 Palmyra is coming off its second straight triumph, a 55-6 romp over CCC opponent Louisiana.

While the Bulldogs have managed just a pair of touchdowns to date, the Panthers produced three in the first quarter and four more in the second of their latest outing, picking up more than 300 yards total offense in pounding out 18 first downs and limiting Louisiana to just five yards rushing, 17 passing and only two first downs.

Brazil reverses course to close higher; Mexico rises

Brazilian equities finished higher Monday as investors took advantage of prices declines earlier in the session, and Mexican stocks were supported by a rally in U.S. markets as investors focused on a drop in oil prices.

In Sao Paulo, the Bovespa rose 174 points, or 0.5%, to close at 34,972.74.

Brazilian shares lost ground earlier in the session, reacting negatively to a sell-off in the currency, said Ricardo Amorim, head of Latin American strategy at WestLB.

The real hit 2.2377 against the U.S. earlier in the day, its lowest level since June 28, and was last down 0.8% at 2.2283. Amorim said the sell-off in the real was prompted by technical-driven factors.

Anglo-style rockers making pop-punk waves in Mexico

Allison. Zoe. Motel. Panda. Novel. The newest trend in Mexican music is dominated by young bands with one-word names and a style reminiscent of Anglo pop-punk and alternative rock.

Unlike Mexican rock pioneers Mana and Cafe Tacuba, which incorporate Latin elements in their music, the new groups are young enough to have grown up on and still be in the target audience of MTV.

Borrowing from Anglo groups is not new in Mexico, but this time the sound is heavily influenced by pop-punk bands like Blink-182 and Green Day. One band, EMIs Zoe, also draws on British groups that would land on alternative rock stations in the United States, like the Cure.

Virtual fence to protect US-Mexico border

BOEING has been chosen to build a virtual fence using sensors and cameras along the US border with Mexico and Canada to help control illegal immigration in a contract projected to be worth up to $US2billion ($3.2billion).

The Secure Border Initiative, or SBInet, will be launched along a 45km stretch of the border near Tucson, Arizona, and eventually be expanded to some 9656km of border areas, the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday.

What we are looking to build is a virtual fence, a 21st-century virtual fence, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said.

Mr Chertoff said the first stage of the three-year contract was worth $US67 million, but refused to say how much the entire contract was worth. The contract can be extended for up to three additional years.

Mexico assets down on US economy, emerging markets

Mexican stocks and the peso fell on Friday on concerns of a slowdown in U.S. economic growth and a slump in emerging markets.

The IPC stock market index < .MXX> dropped 1.50 percent to 21,175.59 points and the peso currency was off 0.41 percent at 11.1000 per dollar.

Mexican markets fell sharply on Thursday after the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said its business activity index slid to -0.4 in September from 18.5 in August, its weakest level in more than 3 years.
Mexicos economy is especially vulnerable to a U.S. slowdown as Americans buy 90 percent of its exports.
