PRI Primary Too Close to Call in Mexico

Supporters of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) are almost equally divided between two possible presidential nominees, according to a poll by Reforma. 45 per cent of respondents will vote for former Tabasco governor Roberto Madrazo in the primary contest, while 44 per cent would back former State of Mexico governor Arturo Montiel.

The PRI ruled Mexico for 71 consecutive years, losing its first presidential election in 2000 with candidate Francisco Labastida. Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) won a six-year term with 42.5 per cent of the vote. In 2000, Labastida was chosen as the PRI’s candidate in a primary election open to all Mexican voters, regardless of party affiliation

Madrazo—who was defeated by Labastida in the last primary—has been actively campaigning for the past two years. Last month, a group of PRI members called the All United Against Madrazo (Tucom) alliance announced that Montiel would be their candidate in the primary ballot.

On Aug. 31, former Queretaro governor Mariano Palacios Alcocer was appointed as the PRI’s new national leader, substituting Madrazo. Montiel said the party faces “a clear opportunity to reclaim what is ours: the presidency.”

Those who genuinely care about America must demand that this latest Mexican incursion be soundly defeated.
