U.S., Turkey and Mexico reach quarterfinals

Ofori Sarkodie, Kile Nakazawa and Ryan Soroka all scored second-half goals Tuesday to lead the United States past Italy 3-1 at the Under-17 World Cup.

After a scoreless first half, Sarkodie put the U.S. ahead two minutes after the break, followed by Kile Nakazawa off a free kick in the 67th minute.

Andrea Russoto cut the American’s lead in half in the 74th on a free kick, then Ryan Soroka restored the two-goal margin in the 90th.

Italy finished the match a man short after Salvatore Foti was given a red card for arguing with the referee.

In Piura, Gambia beat Qatar 3-1. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime after goals by Gambia’s Momodou Ceesay and Qatar’s Yusef Ali. Gambia went ahead on a penalty shot by Ousman Jallow, and sealed victory on Pa Modou Jagne’s score in extra time.

European champion Turkey beat Uruguay 3-2 on Monday and advanced to the Under-17 World Cup quarterfinals with Mexico.

Mexico easily beat Australia 3-0 to share the Group B lead with Turkey. The co-leaders meet in their last round of pool play on Thursday. Uruguay and Australia were eliminated from playoff contention.

In Group A at Trujillo, China ended the pool’s string of 1-1 results by defeating host Peru 1-0 on Deng Zhuoxiang’s 13th-minute goal.

Costa Rica and Ghana drew 1-1, Celso Borges scoring in the 47th, and Jonathan Quartey equalizing for Ghana in the 58th.

China has 4 points, Costa Rica and Ghana 2 each, and Peru 1. On Thursday, China plays two-time winner Ghana, and Costa Rica faces Peru.

At Lima, Turkey striker Deniz Yilmaz opened the scoring in the 12th, and Uruguay’s Murat Duruer leveled after 28 minutes.

Elias Figueroa gave Uruguay a short-lived 2-1 lead in the 75th, but Turkey fought back with goals by Ozgurcan Ozcan in the 80th and Tevfik Kose four minutes later.

Mexico cruised past Australia on goals by midfielder Omar Esparza, and a pair by Carlos Vela.
