Delta to fly eight new routes to Mexico

Delta Air Lines Inc. on Tuesday said it plans to fly eight new routes to Mexico as part of its bankruptcy reorganization plan, which includes boosting international capacity.

The nonstop service would include flights from Atlanta to Acapulco and Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa; from Boston, Cincinnati and Washington to Cancun and from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa.

Delta is waiting for clearance from the Transportation Department on several of the routes but, if added, the new flights would more than double its service to Mexico by April 2006.

The additions are a response “to customers’ demand for new or expanded service to some of the fastest growing regions of Mexico,” said James Sarvis, director of Delta’s Latin America and Caribbean segment.

The company said shortly after filing for bankruptcy in September that it planned cut domestic capacity by 15 percent to 20 percent and, at the same time, boost international capacity by 25 percent in 2006 to pursue more profitable routes.

Earlier Tuesday, the company reiterated it will reduce its domestic flight schedule to save fuel costs, but did not offer details as to which routes would be cut.

Delta shares were unchanged at 79 cents in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Drug violence extends beyond Mexico's traditional smuggling routes Until seven corpses turned up here a few weeks ago, residents of this hamlet nestled near the coffee-rich mountains of southern Mexico thought they were immune from the drug violence that's long plagued the gritty northern border with the United States. Now they live in fear, as drug violence has arrived deep in the heart of Mexico. The dead men were strangers, dressed in fashionable jeans and designer underwear. Each man's hands and feet were bound by duct tape. Their eyes and mouths were also taped over, leaving the victims looking like silver

United, Delta and Continental also have reduced service until at least mid-December. US Airways resumes its full schedule Dec. 1.
