Mazda Opens First Dealerships in Mexico
Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday it has started commercial operations in Mexico with dealerships in the country’s three main cities.
In a statement, Mazda said that in a first phase, it will offer three models: the Mazda3 subcompact in four-door and hatchback versions, the Mazda5 minivan, and the Mazda6 Sports Sedan.
Mazda said the cars will sold through independent distributors backed by a multinational management team reporting to its central offices in Hiroshima, Japan and its offices in Irvine, California.
The company said it’s starting out with four dealerships - two in Mexico City and one each in Guadalajara and Monterrey - and has plans to open others in the states of Mexico, Guanajuato, Yucatan, Puebla and Sonora.
A spokesman for Mazda Motor de Mexico said the first Mazda3 and Mazda5 models already have been imported from Japan, while the Mazda6 cars will be brought in from the United States.

Mazda to start selling cars in Mexico in October - report
Mazda Motor Corp plans to enter the Mexican market in October, selling cars assembled in Japan and the US, Jiji Press reported without citing sources.
In the current fiscal year ending March 2006, Mazda plans to sell a total of 2,000 units of three types of cars including a small vehicle and sports car,the news agency said.
Nissan Motor Co and Honda Motor Co are already selling cars in Mexico that has annual sales of 1 mln vehicles, Jiji said.

In July, we posted that Google had acquired San Paulo-based, Akwan Information Technologies and planned to open a research and development center there. Google opens offices in Brazil, Mexico
Search engine Google Inc. on Thursday said that it has opened offices in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico City, as it looks to accelerate growth in Latin America.
The offices will be charged with boosting use of Google Web sites and increasing advertising sales in the region for the Mountain View, California-based Internet company.
The Mexico operation is led by Gonzalo Alonso, formerly sales director for the T1MSN Internet service. Google's operation in Brazil is managed by Alexandre Hohagen, who was previously Brazil general manager for HBO.

U.S. Choice Hotels Opens Three Hotels in Mexico City
U.S. hotel chain Choice Hotels International Inc. opened three new hotels in Mexico City, the chain said on May 11, 2006.
Choice Hotels is headquartered in Silver Spring, in the U.S. state Maryland.
Two of the hotels are in the tourism zone Zona Rosa, while the third hotel is located in the neighbourhood Colonia Roma, Choice Hotels said. The hotels in Zona Rosa are of the brands Quality Inn and Quality Suites, while the hotel in Colonia Roma is a Quality Inn one.

Merrill Lynch opens Grupo Mexico cover with "buy"
Merrill Lynch began coverage of Mexican copper giant Grupo Mexico with a "buy" rating on Tuesday, pointing to strong prices, a debt restructuring and improvements in returning cash to shareholders.
Merrill Lynch set its 12-month price target for Grupo Mexico at 26 pesos per share. They were trading on Tuesday morning at 18.57 pesos, up 1.31 percent in the session.
Grupo Mexico has leveraged record metals prices to tidy up its finances, reducing net debt from $2.5 billion in December 2004 to $1.4 at the end of June.

Cooperation is key for Mexico, U.S. game wardens
Game wardens from Mexico will join U.S. game wardens on Thursday to observe how enforcement is done here at the annual dove opener in Imperial Valley.
Lt. Joe Brana, a 26-year veteran of the Department of Fish and Game based here, said one or possibly two Mexican game wardens will ride along with his opening-day enforcement team of state and federal game wardens. Dove season opens Thursday, with shooting time set for 5:47 a.m.

Mexico opens door to older used cars from U.S.
Mexican President Vicente Fox issued a decree today allowing Mexicans to import 10- to 15-year-old cars from the U.S. and Canada.

The decree also allows Mexicans to register vehicles that are in that age bracket and already in the country, either illegally or with temporary permission.
Those who apply for Mexican license plates and registrations on the used cars will be charged a value-added tax and a 10 percent import duty. Also, the Finance Ministry reserves the right to limit the number of imports.
