International Meat Review: Mexico Largest Market For U.S. Beef

On December 14, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) published October 2005 U.S. red meat export figures. According to the data, during October, U.S. exports of beef and veal cuts and beef variety meats totaled 41,920 MT. This was 33.7 percent higher than the previous month and was 27.5 percent higher than October 2004. More specifically, exports of fresh, chilled beef equaled 14,599 MT and exports of frozen beef equaled 2,092 MT.

During October, U.S. beef variety meat exports rose 33.1 percent over September and 52.4 percent over October 2004 to 23,332 MT. Total year-to-date beef variety meat exports were 52.4 percent greater than the same period a year ago, equaling 205,447 MT. U.S. beef exports to Mexico during October increased 23.3 percent over the previous month to 23,016 MT.

Year-to-date exports to Mexico equaled 221,535 MT, 52.0 percent above last year. Accordingly, Mexico was the largest market for U.S. beef with 59.2 percent of the total exports. During October, the U.S. exported 6,133 MT of beef to Canada, which was up 66.7 percent over September. Total year-to-date beef exports to Canada were 129.7 percent more than a year ago, amounting to 36,732 MT. U.S. beef exports to Egypt rose 108.9 percent over the previous month to 5,275 MT. Year-to-date exports to Egypt totaled 19,963 MT, compared to 29 MT a year ago.
