Mexico Border Retail the Highlight of Conference
An inside look at current and future trends in cross-border retailing, including the impacts of peso swings and increased border security, is the focus of a January conference in San Antonio.
“Cross-Border Shopping Activity” will be Friday, January 13, 2006, at the Holiday Inn Select, 77 N. E. Loop 410, San Antonio.
The conference is sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, San Antonio and El Paso Branches; the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Detroit Branch; and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
Participants can register to attend at http://www.dallasfed.org . Speakers will address a variety of topics such as the cross-border retail industry’s influence on the robust job market in South Texas and the movement of big U.S. retailers into Mexico.

Strong retail sales raise hopes for Mexico economy
Mexican retail sales rose 5.2 percent in September as consumer spending gave a boost to an otherwise tepid economy dragged down by a weak manufacturing sector, the government said on Monday.
The gain matched economists' median forecast.
"Things are turning around," said Christian Stracke, lead emerging markets analyst at Wall Street research firm CreditSights. "We've seen a few months of pretty solid indicators coming out across the board."
Wholesale sales rose 1.1 percent in September compared with the same month last year, and seasonally adjusted data showed retail sales rose 1.73 percent month-on month.

Mexico, US governors pledge to strengthen co-op in border security
Governors of border states between Mexico and the United States reached agreements on further cooperation in border security and migrants on Friday, pledging toask their federal governments to declare the 3,200-km border a "strategic zone" for security.
The governors made the remarks at a joint statement signed after concluding a two-day conference in Mexico's Torreon, 807 km northwest of Mexico City.
They agreed that the establishment of a strategic zone between the two countries would bring more federal funds to the border region
Mexicos Carso seeks to delist Sanborns retail unit
Mexican conglomerate Grupo Carso said on Monday it would ask shareholders to make an offer to buy up to 100 percent of outstanding shares in retail unit Grupo Sanborns and delist the company from Mexicos stock market.
Carso (GCARSOA1.MX: Quote, Profile, Research), an industrial and retail conglomerate that belongs to the business empire of Latin Americas richest man, Carlos Slim, said it would offer to pay 26 pesos per share it does not currently own in Sanborns (GSANBORB1.MX: Quote, Profile, Research), for an estimated total cost of 4.1 billion pesos ($376 million).

Labour Minister attends Mexico conference
Minister of Labour, Public Administration & Empowerment Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro is representing Antigua & Barbuda at the two-day 14th Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour (IACML) in Mexico City.
The conference, which began yesterday, is being held under the theme: “People and their Work at the Heart of Globalisationâ€.
Its main objective is the consideration and adoption of the declaration and plan of action of Mexico by the ministers of labour of the member countries of the Organisation of American States.

Mexico calls for migrant plan, not troops at border
Mexico on Thursday called for immigration reform that was "orderly and respectful of human rights" after Arizona announced plans to expand the presence of the National Guard on the Mexico-U.S. border.
Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano issued an executive order on Wednesday expanding the number of National Guard troops operating on the border with Mexico to fight illegal immigration.
"They are there to provide support to civilian law enforcement at the border. They are not there to militarize the border. We are not at war with Mexico," Gov. Napolitano said in comments published on Thursday
Mexico demands U.S. probe fatal border shooting
Mexico demanded a U.S. investigation on Monday into the death of an undocumented Mexican shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent as he tried to cross into California last week.
Raul Martinez, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, confirmed that an agent had fired on a man on Friday as he tried to cross the border near San Diego, after the would-be immigrant had thrown rocks at him.
The unidentified man crossed back into Mexico, where he later died of his injuries in a hospital.

Brazilian stocks declined Friday, pulled down by a steeper-than-expected decline in U.S. industrial production, a fall in Brazilian retail sales and a growing aversion to risk among investors.

Mexico's attractiveness as a destination for foreign direct investment rose this year, but the country remained outside of the top 10 for the second straight year, global consulting company AT Kearney said Wednesday.
