State hopes float brings attention to New Mexico

New Mexico is hoping a float in the Tournament of Roses parade Monday in Pasadena, Calif., brings attention to the state.

New Mexico’s entry, called “Land of Enchantment,†is the latest in an aggressive effort by New Mexico officials to market the state for tourism and movies.

Gov. Bill Richardson not only will be waving to parade-goers from the float, he also will have talks with California film industry officials.

The Tourism Department also hopes to get the attention of football fans by giving away free tickets to the Rose Bowl.

The state’s float will cost an estimated $165,000.

Tourism Secretary Michael Cerletti says part of that is paid by the Santa Fe Opera, the Albuquerque Tricentennial committee, Acoma Pueblo and the Pueblo Indian Cultural Center.

Border crisis confounds US, Mexico

Border crisis confounds US, Mexico The declaration of states of emergency in New Mexico and Arizona over growing cross-border smuggling and violence is only the tip of the iceberg. And there doesn`t seem to be anything effective Washington and Mexico City can do to reverse it. Critics of Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona charge that they declared states of emergency in their Southwestern states as a cynical political ploy aimed at strengthening their Democratic Party`s prospects for the next congressional and presidential elections, and furthering their own standings within it. It is certainly the case that

Mexico sees bigger butterfly migration this year

Mexico sees bigger butterfly migration this year Wildlife officials say good weather should bring a surge in the number of monarch butterflies migrating to Mexico this year, after last year's cold resulted in the lowest numbers in more than a decade. Each fall tens of millions of the bright orange and black butterflies begin arriving in central Mexico's Michoacan state to winter in the fir trees after a 3,000-mile (4,800-km) trek from Canada that fascinates biologists. At El Rosario reserve, one of five butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico, officials expect the insects to occupy far more forest this year than the 2.2 hectares (5.4
