Irish girl missing in Gulf of Mexico
A search operation is continuing off Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula for an Irish teenager who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the early hours of yesterday morning.
15-year-old Lynsey O’Brien from Dublin, a pupil of the Loreto High School, Beaufort, in Dublin, was on a family holiday in the Caribbean aboard the vessel Costa Magica.
It is understood Ms O’Brien was on the top deck of the ship with her 11-year-old sister, Imelda, when she fell overboard. Her sister then alerted her parents and a search was initiated.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Irish Embassy in Mexico is providing consular assistance to the missing girl’s family.

Missing Fernley girl found in Mexico
An 8-year-old Fernley girl who authorities say was abducted July 22 by a convicted sex offender and taken to Mexico is safe in Ensenada, Mexico, authorities from Lyon County confirmed Friday night.
Mexican officials are working with U.S. authorities to return Lydia Bethany-Rose Rupp to her mother in Fernley, said Capt. Jeff Page of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. The girl’s alleged abductor — 47-year-old Fernando Aguerro — is in the custody of Mexican authorities and is awaiting extradition proceedings, Page said.
Lydia and Aguerro were found at a shelter for low-income people, Page said.
Body of young girl found in suitcase in Mexico
Police discovered the body of a young girl on Thursday that had been stuck inside a suitcase and left on a busy sidewalk in Mexico City.
Investigators were working to identify the girl, thought to be between 5 and 6 years old, and establish the cause of death, a police spokeswoman said.

A Tucson man has lost his life in Mexico after trying to save the life of his 5-year-old niece.

A convicted sex offender who ran off to Mexico with a 16-year-old Long Island girl has pleaded guilty to third-degree rape and sodomy.
Lester Joy, 25, of Morristown, N.J., said he met the girl on the Internet and went to her house in Hampton Bays on Jan. 31, 2005.
He said he and the girl climbed out of the window and fled to Mexico.

A college student was still missing Tuesday after a weekend night out with friends in Matamoros, Mexico. Friends of Juan Carlos "Charlie" Ramos, 24, said they were about to cross back to the United States on Saturday, when Ramos left them after a fight about who would pay the border-crossing fee. Oil Production Down 78 Percent in Gulf of Mexico
The U.S. government says oil production in the Gulf of Mexico was nearly 80 percent below normal as of Saturday, five days after Hurricane Katrina tore through the region.
A report from the U.S. Minerals Management Service said Katrina had cut oil production in the Gulf by about 1.18 million barrels of oil per day. It said more than 280 offshore oil-drilling rigs and platforms remained evacuated.
The figures represent a slight improvement from Friday, when oil production in the Gulf was nearly 90 percent below normal.

Shell, BP evacuate Gulf of Mexico workers due to Hurricane Katrina
Royal Dutch Shell PLC and BP PLC have evacuated workers from their platforms in the Gulf of Mexico as Hurricane Katrina heads towards the area.
Shell, in a statement, said it will evacuate around 120 non-essential staff from the eastern part of its Gulf operations as a 'precaution'.
A BP spokesman said it will also evacuate a still undetermined number of workers.
Both companies said the move will not affect their Gulf production.
