Mexico presidential challenger vows protests after court rejects full recount
Mexico leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador [campaign website, in Spanish] has vowed to continue with street demonstrations after the Federal Electoral Tribunal [official website, in Spanish] on Saturday rejected his request for a full ballot-by-ballot recount [JURIST report] of all votes cast in the July 2 presidential election [JURIST news archive], which Obrador lost by less than a percentage point to conservative Felipe Calderon [campaign website, in Spanish]. Obrador slammed the seven judges unanimous ruling, telling followers that were going to continue our movement of peaceful civil resistance…If they refuse to open all the polling stations and count all the votes, it is complete proof that we won the presidential election. Chief Judge Leonel Castillo in turn defended the decision [El Universal report], saying that fraud in the count was practically impossible because the people doing it were chosen at random.
The Mexican government has raised security at Mexico City international airport, power plants, and oil refineries fearing further civil unrest.

Mexicos top electoral court ordered a partial recount on Saturday in a fiercely contested presidential election, angering leftists who are threatening mass protests unless all votes are counted again.

Mexicos ruling party candidate held onto his narrow lead in the disputed presidential election after a partial recount of votes, the top electoral court said Monday in a strong indication that conservative Felipe Calderon will be declared the winner.

Mexicos Tribunal Ruling Still Leaves People Wondering
Mexicos Supreme Electoral Tribunal (known as the Trife) has decided to rejected the full recount of the countrys 130,000 precincts, and only limit the count to 11,839 precincts or (9.07%) of the ballots, beginning August 9th. The partial recount ordered by the court will begin Wednesday and last for one week and the results must be submitted by August 16.

Mexico says it opposes a US plan to build more fences along the border in order to control illegal immigration.
Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said his country "does not believe physical barriers are the solution".
President George W Bush announced the construction of more fences in the 3,200km (2,000 miles) border while touring US states earlier this week.
