Boca Juniors poach Lavolpe from Mexico national team

Argentine soccer club Boca Juniors on Tuesday introduced Mexico former national team manager Ricardo Lavolpe to the press as the clubs new manager.

The 54-year-old is replacing Alfio Basile, who will join Argentinas national team as manager on Sep. 15.

It is an honor for me to lead a team like Boca Juniors, which is big not just in Argentina but across the world, Lavolpe told reporters. His contract begins on Sep 15, and will run until June 30, 2007.

Lavolpe brings with him a team including coach and son-in-law Flavio Davino, former soccer star Osvaldo Ingrao and physical trainers Hernan Puerta and Milton Graniolatti.

Lavolpe, 54, a former Argentina goalkeeper who has enjoyed an edgy relationship with the media, confirmed his tactical judgement is sound with his swift decisions as Mexico swept to victory in their opening group D clash. The substitutions made all the difference in the way the team performed today, he said. The team functioned much better in the second half than it did in

Mexico’s best is still in action, just not in the playoffs

Mexico's best is still in action, just not in the playoffs Turns out the best team in Mexico won't get the chance to prove it against its peers. Right now, there is no better Mexican club than Pumas, who are battling Argentine giants Boca Juniors for the Copa Sudamericana title. Despite a ghastly league season that cost former coach Hugo Sánchez his job, Pumas have come together at the right time and are making the right amount of noise necessary for

World Cup berth assured for U.S.-Mexico winner What suspense remains in the CONCACAF Region's World Cup qualifying tournament should be drastically reduced in the next week. The winner of Saturday's United States-Mexico match will claim one of the region's three spots in next year's World Cup finals in Germany, and Mexico (5-0-1) needs only a tie to get in. The Americans (5-1-0), second in the six-team group, are poised for their biggest match of the year and will have rare home-field crowd support at Columbus Crew Stadium, with the game selling out 20 minutes after tickets went on sale. Columbus also was the

U.S.-Mexico matchup pits elite of the region

It's obvious the United States and Mexico are going to be in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Surely, U.S. manager Bruce Arena and Mexican manager Ricardo LaVolpe would not admit this in front of their players, but it's reality. On Saturday, it's win and you're in when the teams meet in Columbus, Ohio. And the sooner a team qualifies, the better its chances could potentially be at the World Cup. So here's the plan: Win and qualify. Celebrate briefly. Refocus. Realistically, the U.S. and Mexico have navigated the CONCACAF qualifying waters with confidence and have put themselves in position to qualify for Germany
