Floating Gardens of Xochimilco : Mexico City

Floating Gardens of Xochimilco

Xochimilco became recognized as a tourist attraction in its own right in the 1920s. In the southern neighborhood of Xochimilco are more than 82km (51 miles) of canals known as the “Floating Gardens.” Often you would see friends with 2 or 3 boats joined side by side. They would be having a party, reunion or celebration complete with lots of food, wine, beer or tequila and naturally the happy sounds of the mariachis. What a fun way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. In the past this was the main market for growing flowers and vegetables. Now it is a net of channels with many “trajinera” escorted by the native people of the place while they sail by in boats offering flowers, handicrafts and typical dishes.

All the while listening to the “mariachis” who also sail by on board of other trajineras while playing and singing their classical songs. All of the larger boats were skillfully propelled by a strong man with a long pole. In pre-Hispanic Mexico, in the valley where Mexico City stands was a lake called Lago Texcoco, which now has long been drained. The Aztecs, on its edge, long before the Spanish came, dug a series of canals, whose mud they heaped on the earth around the canals or on anchored reeds atop the water. These plots of land, appeared like floating islands called chinampas - hence, their name ‘floating gardens’.
