Alameda Central [Historic District] : Mexico City
Alameda Central is a downtown oasis of greenery, fountains and statuary. The imposing Palacio de Bellas Artes, a performing arts venue and a must-see for its art-deco interior, is next to the park. In the part of the Centro Historico between Alameda Central and the Zocalo are several impressive buildings and museums, including the Palacio de Iturbide (an Italian baroque palace), Casa de Azulejos (the House of Tiles), the Correo Central (the lovely main post office), the Museo Nacional de Arte (a grand building with Mexican art exhibits) and Museo de Franz Mayer (religious art and European antiques).
Modern skyscrapers and hotels flank the stately Paseo de la Reforma, which takes you from the Historic Center to Chapultepec Park. It’s nice to take an afternoon stroll along the tree-lined boulevard, looking at its various monuments, especially the famous Angel column. Along the way is La Zona Rosa, a popular neighborhood for shopping, dining and nightlife. Chapultepec Park is not only the city’s largest park; it’s also home to many fine museums, such as the world-renowned Museo Nacional de Antropologia (Museum of Anthropology).
Two southern suburbs, Coyoacan and San Angel, are worth visiting for their markets, museums and general colonial charm. The Pyramids of Teotihuacan, north of the city, make for a fascinating day trip, and the famous floating gardens at Xochimilco are a pleasant excursion. Xochimilco is also home to the Dolores Olmedo Patino Museum, which displays some of the best-known works of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

Canplats to Acquire New Gold Project in Mexico

Hotel closure after Mexico-US row
Local authorities in a district of Mexico City have announced the imminent closure of a US-owned hotel at the centre of a diplomatic row. It said the branch of the Sheraton chain had committed irregularities such as unauthorised building work and failure to provide a menu in Braille.
The announcement comes as Mexico investigates the hotel for expelling 16 Cuban officials last week. The delegation was ordered out to comply with a US embargo against Cuba.

UPDATE 4-Mexico pushes rates lower in historic move
Mexico's central bank pushed interest rates lower on Friday for the first time in over three years to give the soft economy a boost, now that inflation is under control.
It was the first time the bank has explicitly told markets where it wants interest rates to go, and analysts said it was a major step toward a U.S.-style reference rate system.
"Considering the balance of risks versus inflation, the central bank has decided to allow a relaxation of domestic monetary conditions of no more than 25 basis points," the central bank said in

Mexico teachers clash with police in historic city
Mexican police forced out thousands of striking teachers camped in the heart of this historic city on Wednesday in the latest clash between protesters and government forces ahead of July elections.
Local radio said two people were killed and one was injured, although the report was not confirmed. Witnesses and press reports said shots were fired.

Architecture
The historic center of the city still contains much Spanish Colonial architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the historical buildings have been impressively restored; others, however, are in an abject state of disrepair.
Of all the colonial buildings, the most impressive are without any doubt the Cathedral, which is said to be the biggest in Latin America, in a somewhat mixed neoclassical style; the Rosario Chapel, all covered with gold, a dramatic example of Mexican baroque.
