Mexicali is the capital of the state of Baja California, Mexico. Situated along the state’s northern border with the U.S. state of California, Mexicali is a short distance (about 2 hours drive) from San Diego, California. Mexicali has an International Airport, served by Aeroméxico, Mexicana de Aviación and AeroCalifornia, among others.
Mexicali is a sister city of Calexico, California, which lies directly across the international border, as each city’s name combines California and Mexico.
Mexicali is also known for its bullfighting arena, called “Plaza de Toros Calafia".
Mexicali has also the largest Chinatown, called La Chinesca, and the largest number of overseas Chinese in Mexico. Today, many people in Mexicali have at least some Chinese ancestry in them. Some of the best Chinese food in Mexico is found in Mexicali. Founded on 14 March 1903, its name comes from the anagram MEXI-co and CALI-fornia, which in an inverse way also generated the name of Calexico, access door to the state of California and frontier with Mexicali.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, looking to improve his image with Hispanics at home, arrived in Mexico on Friday and met with Baja California Gov. Eugenio Elorduy about security issues, immigration and a controversial border canal.
Schwarzenegger has come under fire from many of his state's 12 million Hispanics for opposing driver's licenses for illegal immigrants and proposing health and welfare cuts that would have hit Hispanics hard.
He angered both Californians and the Mexican government when he praised a citizen border patrol and said California's border with Mexico should be closed – something he quickly apologized for.

Whales wash up dead near Mexicos Baja coast
Eleven beaked whales were washed up on beaches near Mexicos sparsely populated Baja California peninsula and all of them died, the countrys environmental protection agency said on Friday.
The whales were found earlier this week mostly on islands in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, and had been dead for several days, an official at the Profepa agency said.
He said the cause of the whales deaths was being investigated. A group of squid, which the whales feed on, was also found dead nearby.

Strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurs off Mexico's Baja California coast
A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in the pre-dawn hours off the coast of the Baja California peninsula in the Sea of Cortes, also known as the Gulf of California, the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colorado reported.
The quake occurred about 2:32 a.m. local time (0832 GMT), and was centered about 56 miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Santa Rosalia, Baja California. The quake occurred at an estimated depth of six miles (10 kilometers), the center reported.

Protesters Meet Governor in Mexico
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't the only Californian to travel to Mexicali, Mexico this past weekend for the Governor's meeting with Baja State officials.
As the Governor's motorcade pulled in front of the building for the meeting, he heard from protesters who drove from San Diego to express their opposition to the Schwarzenegger administration's immigration policies.
Gov. Schwarzenegger was in Mexicali to talk about border issues as well as trade and the economy.

Mexico's Fernanda grows into hurricane
Forecasters promoted Tropical Storm Fernanda to hurricane status early today, but it held little threat to land.
Fernanda was well out to sea in the Pacific and was moving to the west-northwest, away from the Baja California Peninsula. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it had winds of about 75 mph.
A second disturbance trailing behind Fernanda was gaining force and forecasters said it could grow into a tropical storm. But it, too, held little danger to those ashore.

Stressing his love of the country to the south, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger emphasized his goal of stronger ties with Mexico in his weekly radio address Saturday.
Looking to boost his image with Hispanics at home, Schwarzenegger visited Mexico on Friday, meeting with his Baja California counterpart in talks on security and immigration.
"Mexico is our Number One trading partner, and I am proud that we have increased trade with Mexico by 16 percent last year alone," Schwarzenegger said Saturday. "Our trade relationship supports as many as 200,000 California jobs and generates nearly $160 billion for our economy."
