Diary Note Mexico: Amnesty International Secretary General to visit the country
Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan will lead a High Level Mission to Mexico between 8th and 10th August 2005.
Amnesty International’s delegation will include Susan Lee, Director of the Americas programme; Rupert Knox, Researcher on Mexico; Monica Costa, Campaigner on Mexico and Judit Arenas, Head of the Office of the Secretary General.
The delegation will visit the city of Chihuahua and Mexico City and will meet state and federal authorities and members of civil society. Amnesty International has invited representatives of the main political parties to a public discussion ahead of the upcoming Presidential elections.

The Secretary-General is saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the severe flooding and mudslides that have affected hundreds of thousands of people across Mexico and Central America. Mexico: International funding available for Mexico-Central America refinery
International funding is available for a proposed oil refinery in Central America that would help reduce the cost of fuel for countries in the region, Mexico's energy secretary said Wednesday.
"We've already received offers from monetary institutions to finance 100 percent of the project," Secretary Fernando Canales said in an interview with W Radio. Specifically, Canales mentioned the Inter-American Development Bank as a potential sponsor.
Mexican and Central American leaders formalized their agreement to build a refinery in an as-yet-undesignated Central American country during the Americas Summit last week in Argentina.

Chinese President to visit U.S, Canada and Mexico in September
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday that Chinese President Hu Jintao plans to visit the United States, Canada and Mexico from Sept. 5 to 17.
The White House said this week President George W. Bush would host Hu on Sept. 7.
China and the U.S. have gone through months of rising trade friction as well as growing cooperation on trying to stop North Korea's nuclear arms ambitions.
Hu will also attend the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly in New York, which runs from Sept. 13-16.

S.Korean president to visit US, Mexico, Costa Rica
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun will visit the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica early next month, Roh's spokesman Kim Man-soo said Monday.
The president will first fly to Mexico City on Sept. 8 for a four-day state visit there, during which Roh will hold summit meeting with his Mexican counterpart Vicente Fox on ways to enhance their comprehensive cooperative relationship in security and trade, said Kim.

Mexican President Vicente Fox plans to visit Utah on May 23-24 on a trip that also includes stops in Seattle and Sacramento, Calif.
Fox sent a request Tuesday to Mexicos Congress for permission to visit the three states May 23-27. The arrangements are subject to that bodys approval, but Mike Mower, spokesman for Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, said Mexican officials indicated approval was imminent and wanted to proceed with planning.
