Canada, Mexico Mull Daylight-Saving Plan

Canadians and Mexicans are considering whether to follow U.S. plans to extend daylight-saving time after Congress passed a bill Friday to expand the spring-forward-fall-back scheme by a month.

The energy bill, expected to be signed by President Bush next week, is touted to save energy by expanding daylight-saving time by adding three weeks in the spring and a week in the fall, taking it up to Halloween.

The change is not slated to go into effect until 2007. But officials in Canada worry about being out of sync with U.S. time for airlines, manufacturers, the financial sector and television programming. Canada follows daylight-saving time like the United States.

The Ontario government has been flooded with e-mails on extending daylight saving time, with the major sentiment “we’ve got to be in sync'’ for economic reasons, said David Zimmer, parliamentary assistant for Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant.

Jim Prather, who owns a restaurant in west Tennessee, says he doesn't think the highway would be much of a boon to the economy in the two states. Jim Newland, leader of a group that opposes the

Saving some baby sea turtles in Mexico

Saving some baby sea turtles in Mexico I'm on an isolated Mexican beach in the dark, waves crashing, yet all I'm thinking about is the first time I sent each of my kids off to school. There are no brave 5-year-olds getting on yellow school buses anywhere near this remote spot two hours north of Puerto Vallarta on Mexico's Pacific Coast, no moms and dads clutching cameras and wiping away tears. The "kids" that have prompted my sweet reverie could fit into a kindergartner's palm: Baby Olive Ridley sea turtles, more than 600 of them tonight, with our help are taking their

Crew plans to tag along when butterflies migrate to Mexico

Crew plans to tag along when butterflies migrate to Mexico The annual arrival of millions of Monarch butterflies from the forests of eastern Canada to the central Mexican mountains for the winter is an aesthetic and scientific wonder. And this year, they won't be flying alone. A crew plans to accompany the butterflies on their 3,415-mile-journey while riding in an oversized hang-glider painted with giant versions of the orange, black and white wings of the Monarch. Their aim is to raise awareness for the need to better conserve the Monarchs' fragile habitats. Illegal logging is thinning and toppling the fir forests west

Canada Fifth As Venezuela, Colombia And Mexico Earn World Cup Berths In the end, the ground was too much for Canada to make up at the Nations Cup. With a 72-hole total of 15-under 269, Canada finished in fifth spot, three shots back of Chile and Mexico, who finished in a tie for third.
