In the spirit of fictional adventurer Indiana Jones, a Carlsbad grandmother has completed a 1,828-mile boat trip from Canada to Mexico, riding solo on a personal watercraft.
Jane Usatin, 56, was attending a biblical archaeology conference when her interest was sparked after watching “a bunch of guys on Jet Skis” and deciding it looked like fun.
“But I’m not the kind to go around in circles,” she said. “I’m a point-to-point person.”
Usatin, a University of San Diego business communications professor, decided it would be fun to ride a personal watercraft along the California coastline, so she began to research the idea early last year.
She was hoping to find Web sites, but soon discovered there were none, apparently because no one had ever made such a trip.
Usatin enrolled in “about every course the Coast Guard Auxiliary had to offer,” learning everything from basic ocean safety and seamanship to coastal navigation and the use of global-positioning systems.
As her planning progressed, Usatin developed four goals —- increase coastal awareness, promote the history of coastal towns, promote the USD marine science scholarship program and counter the popular concept that many personal watercraft users are irresponsible.
Usatin began her voyage on an 11-foot Yamaha in Blaine, Wash., and ended 28 travel days later when she rode past the Tijuana bullring. She averaged about 60 miles a day, but spent one long day traveling 130 miles.
Usatin spent 115 hours alone on her watercraft, many times in high winds and rough seas. Her husband, Josef, followed along the coast in a motor home and maintained contact via marine radio.

Evidence recovered in Mexico killings: reports
Investigators in Mexico recovered evidence from the body of an Ontario woman who was brutally slain along with her husband at a luxury resort, media reports say.
The Toronto Sun is reporting that investigators lifted traces of hair from Nancy Ianiero's hand before her body was returned to Canada.
Ianiero, 55, and her husband Dominic, 59, had their throats slashed last month at a five-star resort on the Mayan Riviera, where they had gone to attend their daughter's wedding.
The hair sample is being analyzed by a laboratory in Mexico City and is believed to belong to the

Garcia declared $1,000 but gave a negative declaration for currency in excess of $10,000, weapons, or ammunition.
CBP officers said they noticed discrepancies in Garcia's clothing, which turned out to be bundles of money totaling $119,912.

St. Paul police were notified by Mexican officials that they believed Noora Salim, 21, had been found there. They requested that her passport be sent to Mexico.
Salim had come to St. Paul with her parents to settle a younger sister at Macalester College. They were to return to Saudi Arabia Sept. 6, but Salim left a note saying she was

Penaloza-Cabrera was convicted in a Hennepin County District Court in 2001 of kidnapping and attempted first-degree sexual conduct for attacking a woman he met in a Minneapolis nightclub. Canada, Mexico agree to uphold NAFTA
Canada and Mexico agreed on Friday to strengthen the procedures of the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) to ensure its rulings are respected.
"Mexico fully supports Canada's position to make sure that the decisions of the NAFTA panels in the settlement of disputes are upheld," Mexican President Vicente Fox said at a luncheon hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin in Vancouver.
Canada is demanding Washington scrap duties on Canadian softwood after a NAFTA panel ruled the United States had failed to justify the need for the tariffs imposed three years ago, but has been
Canada Fifth As Venezuela, Colombia And Mexico Earn World Cup Berths
In the end, the ground was too much for Canada to make up at the Nations Cup.
Stuart Anderson and Craig Taylor did what they could, but a final round 4-under 67 was not enough to assure Canada one of three spots in next month’s World Golf Championships World Cup.
With a 72-hole total of 15-under 269, Canada finished in fifth spot, three shots back of Chile and Mexico, who finished in a tie for third.
Canada started the final round four-shots out of third spot.

Police dumbfounded as serial killer stalks Mexico
This much they know: Someone has been murdering older women in Mexico City, strangling them in their homes, pocketing a keepsake and vanishing into the city's streets.
But investigators do not know whether the killer is a man or a woman, whether there is an accomplice or how the victims are chosen.
After two years and at least 24 unsolved murders, they have one fingerprint that matches partial prints from five other cases, a modus operandi and a police sketch of what appears to be a man made up as a woman.
Investigators pieced together much of
Mexico hopes to expand business ties with Canada
Mexican officials expressed hopes Wednesday that their country could expand business ties and the current guest-worker program with Canada as President Vicente Fox headed to Alberta and British Columbia.
