Arena wants fans to tune in when Americans meet Mexico on soccer pitch
Bruce Arena wants American soccer fans to “put up or shut up.”
Preparing for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Mexico in Columbus, Ohio, the U.S. coach said American fans should demonstrate their support for the sport by watching the game on television as well as tuning into and attending Major League Soccer games.
“I think it’s critical,” Arena said Wednesday. “If we want this sport to grow, if we want to truly position ourselves to one day win a World Cup, we need support from the people that follow soccer in the United States.”
The sixth-ranked Americans and No. 5 Mexico would clinch a World Cup berth with a victory, and both countries could clinch with a tie, depending on other results in the region Saturday. No U.S. clincher has ever been televised live in the United States.
After protracted negotiations, the game will be televised live.
“I’m happy first of all it is live on an English-speaking channel,” Arena said during a telephone conference call. “I’ll be honest with you, it’s the job of supporters of soccer in this country to be better supporters of the game, not only U.S. games on television but MLS games, and be better consumers.
Mexico has point to make in World Cup tune-up
There is nothing friendly or relaxed about tonight's exhibition soccer match between Mexico and Bulgaria at Reliant Stadium. At least not to the Mexican players and coaches.
Tricolores head coach Ricardo La Volpe made that clear by closing practice at the Texans' outdoor field Tuesday.
At practice's end, the Profe — short for professor in Spanish — calmly walked away without uttering a word as hordes of media invaded the field, as if saying to his pupils: "Take care of it. You know what to do."
Apparently they do. And they hope to prove it

Security and police called in to escort Jarrett out of arena
The El Toreo arena in Mexico City nearly erupted in a full-scale riot on Sunday night during an appearance by NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett.
During the main event of the huge AAA “Verano de Escandalo” show in front of over 20,000 spectators, police and extra security had to be called in after fans rushed the ring and threw hundreds of projectiles at Jarrett.

Turkey ends first in Group B after defeating Mexico
Turkey defeated Mexico 2-1 and ended first in Group B of the under-17 World Cup soccer tournament at Miguel Grau Stadium of the northwestern Peruvian city of Piura.
Eleven minutes into the game Mexican Guzman scored, but the Turkey sorted things out to win through the goals scored by Yilmez (min. 27) and Erkin in the last minute.
It was a balanced match, although in general terms, the Europeans controlled the pitch and the ball and were more precise in their attack.

It's obvious the United States and Mexico are going to be in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Surely, U.S. manager Bruce Arena and Mexican manager Ricardo LaVolpe would not admit this in front of their players, but it's reality.
On Saturday, it's win and you're in when the teams meet in Columbus, Ohio.
And the sooner a team qualifies, the better its chances could potentially be at the World Cup.
So here's the plan: Win and qualify. Celebrate briefly. Refocus.
Realistically, the U.S. and Mexico have navigated the CONCACAF qualifying waters with confidence and have put themselves in position to qualify for Germany
World Cup berth assured for U.S.-Mexico winner
What suspense remains in the CONCACAF Region's World Cup qualifying tournament should be drastically reduced in the next week.
The winner of Saturday's United States-Mexico match will claim one of the region's three spots in next year's World Cup finals in Germany, and Mexico (5-0-1) needs only a tie to get in. The Americans (5-1-0), second in the six-team group, are poised for their biggest match of the year and will have rare home-field crowd support at Columbus Crew Stadium, with the game selling out 20 minutes after tickets went on sale.

Mexico Soccer Coach May Be Out
Ricardo Lavolpe is not likely to continue as Mexico coach when his contract expires after the World Cup.
Mexican club owners will meet soon to decide Lavolpes future, but the coach is expected to be shown the door, Mexican Football Federation president Alberto de la Torre said. He said the Mexican manager has offers from Argentine and European clubs.
I think he will not (continue), de la Torre told Mexican channel Televisa. He wants to coach in Europe. He was telling me he has an offer from Spain, and also has offers from Argentina, so hes
NFL will find football thriving in Mexico
When the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers play at Azteca Stadium on Sunday, they’ll discover something Mexicans have known for some time: Football is alive and thriving in this country.
And that’s without the NFL.
Consider the annual Clasico, a nasty rivalry that goes back decades and pits the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Pumas against the Aguilas Blancas, or White Eagles, of the National Polytechnic Institute.
This is Redskins vs. Cowboys, Raiders vs. Chiefs — Mexican style.
“What a game,” gasped the stadium announcer, his voice straining over the din of 45,000 fans. “And you, the
Mexico whoops up teenage world cup win
Soccer-mad Mexico donned a wide-brimmed sombrero and jumped for joy in green, red and white on Sunday to celebrate its first ever World Cup win, unfazed by the under-17 age limit on the teenage tea.
Mexico scored twice in two minutes to set up a stunning 3-0 victory over defending champions Brazil to capture the FIFA Under-17 World Championship.
It wasn't the golden World Cup trophy Mexico has always coveted, but in a country where criticizing a luckless national side is as much a national sport as soccer itself, it was a long-overdue excuse for

U.S. blanks Mexico, earns World Cup spot
There was no better way for the United States to make the World Cup than with a shutout victory over Mexico.
The Americans are headed to next year's soccer championship in Germany after beating the Mexicans 2-0 Saturday night thanks to goals by Steve Ralston and DaMarcus Beasley five minutes apart in the second half.
"We had one blemish on our record when we lost in Mexico City," coach Bruce Arena said, "and it was nice to get that back, and it was very special to qualify against our archrivals."
U.S. star Landon Donovan said it
