Mexico needs draw to secure WC berth

Mexico needs only a draw Wednesday at home against Panama to secure a World Cup berth and perhaps mend its wounded pride after Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the United States.

The trip to Germany next year would be Mexico’s 13th appearance in the World Cup finals and fourth straight.

Sitting in last place in the six-team final round of CONCACAF qualifiying, Panama would be eliminated with a loss at Azteca Stadium and a victory by either Trinidad and Tobago or Guatemala.

The United States, which qualified for its fifth straight World Cup on Saturday, leads standings in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with 18 points, two more than Mexico and eight better than Costa Rica with 10. Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago trail with seven points, while Panama has two.

The top three CONCACAF teams earn World Cup berths, while the fourth-placed side enters a playoff with a team from Asia, either Uzbekistan or Bahrain, for another spot.

Mexico will face Panama without central defender Duilio Davino, suspended for yellow-card accumulation.

Panama’s offense will be without forwards Alberto Blanco and Luis Tejada, also suspended for yellow cards. A dazzling goal by Tejada on a bicycle kick helped Panama draw with Mexico 1-1 earlier this year.

Panama will be playing at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet), with less than 24 hours to acclimate. But Mexico’s coaching staff was still wary. (AP)
