Mexico Goes to Germany 2006
The Mexican national soccer team has qualified for the next World Cup in Germany, becoming the third Latin American country to ensure its placement in the tournament.
Mexico beat Panama 5-0 in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It was a game with only one protagonist – Mexico – which dominated the game’s entire 90 minutes. Panama, conversely, was unmotivated, performing poorly.
El Tricolor – the name Mexicans use for their national team – became the second team in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) after the United States, with Costa Rica, Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago left to dispute the third place for this region.
When they needed only a tie to guarantee their placement in Germany 2006, El Tricolor took advantage, facing an uninspired Panama with goals by Luis Ernesto Perez in the 31st minute, Rafael Marquez (who plays in Barcelona, Spain) in the 53rd, Jared Borgetti, in the 59th, Francisco Fonseca in the 74th and Pavel Pardo in the 76th.
The passion for soccer in Mexico is as strong as in South America, and the people of Mexico City left to celebrate the ticket to Germany in the streets. There were celebrations until late in the night, and shouts of “Nos vamos a Alemania!” meaning, “We go to Germany!”
“For us it is a very great happiness to be able to represent our country in Germany 2006 and to make happy a country that has trusted in us and has always given us the force to obtain this feat,” said Jared Borgetti, author of the game’s third goal.

Mexico stun Brazil, Germany 2006 takes shape
Mexico claimed a FIFA World Championship crown for the first time in their history as they won the U-17 title at the start of October with an emphatic 3-0 win over reigning champions Brazil at Peru 2005. It's obvious the United States and Mexico are going to be in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Surely, U.S. manager Bruce Arena and Mexican manager Ricardo LaVolpe would not admit this in front of their players, but it's reality.
On Saturday, it's win and you're in when the teams meet in Columbus, Ohio.
And the sooner a team qualifies, the better its chances could potentially be at the World Cup.
So here's the plan: Win and qualify. Celebrate briefly. Refocus.
Realistically, the U.S. and Mexico have navigated the CONCACAF qualifying waters with confidence and have put themselves in position to qualify for Germany

Mexicos Archundia to handle Germany-Italy semifinal
Mexicos Benito Archundia was selected to handle the semifinal match between host Germany and Italy, making him the first referee to control five matches at one soccer World Cup tournament.
His fellow Mexican Jose Ramirez and Canadas Hector Vergara will work the touchlines for Tuesdays match in Dortmund, with Japanese pair Toru Kamikawa and Yoshikazu Hiroshima serving as the fourth and fifth officials, FIFA announced yesterday.
Archundia has already been referee for first-round matches between Brazil-Croatia, France-South Korea and Czech Republic-Italy, and the second-round match between Switzerland and Ukraine.
